Sally's Piano Studio

Having come from a musical background (my Grandfather was a military band master, my Father was a bandsmen in the Irish Guards and also a music teacher, my Grandmother was an extremely accomplished pianist) it was inevitable that I should follow in their footsteps.

Fortunately, I had a wonderful first teacher, who inspired me from the age of 4, and hopefully I can do the same for my students.

As a piano teacher, I began my professional activities at the age of 14, (I am now in my sixties!) quickly acquiring students ranging from four to fifty-five years of age!. At the same time I was asked to be the Church Organist at a local church. This resulted in my appearing in the local newspaper as the youngest Church Organist in our city.

As the Church Organist, I was responsible for organising the choir, who were all amateur but very willing. With perseverance and lots of practise they sang in the BBC Sunday Worship radio programme, with myself playing the organ with the choir, and also some solo pieces.

I organised music for Church events, including Nativity plays with the younger children. I also formed a Junior choir.

At  the same time as teaching, I was also receiving tuition from the organist  (Michael Hoeg) of the historic* St Columbs Cathedral, Derry  -right through to my late teens.*(Frances Cecil Alexander – composer of There is a green hill, All things bright and beautiful, Once in Royal Davids City, took inspiration from Derry City).

At school I was 1st Clarinet in both the school band and orchestra. The band was of very high quality and we gave concerts throughout the city. We were asked to undertake a European tour, but sadly our school refused!

From the age of 12 I was involved with the local Operatic society, playing clarinet and sometimes piano.

I have always enjoyed teaching to all levels and ages

All my students that wished to enter exams (ABRSM and Trinity) have all passed (most with distinction.)

Parents are actively encouraged to sit in on the lessons, but this is not compulsory!

I teach Theory of Music alongside Practical.

Most of all, I love to teach music.
